Seasonal Tips
Here are a selection of seasonal tips to help you get the most from your garden. Should you need any assistance then please contact us.
Garden Mulching using Woodchip
With Autumn approaching fast now is the time to start planning the jobs that will need doing in the coming weeks to prepare your garden or plot for winter. One of the first jobs will be to tidy the garden and prepare the beds and plants for the onset of the coming frosts. Introducing woodchip or garden bark into your garden will cover a number of jobs. Spreading a layer over the flower beds – mulching – is a great way to help it retain water and keep the weeds from growing. It keeps the soil in great condition as well as making the flowerbeds look wonderfully tidy over the winter months! Woodchip is also a fantastic quick way of creating something new in the garden such as a new pathway or border? Or lay it under a childrens play area to help keep the mud own over the coming winter months. Woodchip and bark can cover a multitude of sins in a garden!
We can supply woodchip to you in bulk bags and of course can assist you in the laying of it in your garden if you wish.
Winter Pruning
Winter pruning is an important job to take on from around November onwards. It is important to prune certain shrubs/trees and plants to encourage flowering, remove disease, thin crowded stems and promote bigger harvests. Most plants are dormant through winter and pruning deciduous plants in winter will encourage faster growth as the spring sets in. Some of the plants and trees that can be pruned in winter include;
Deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs such as Berberis, Magnolias, Cotinus.
Apple and Pear trees – this will encourage fruiting.
Roses – Floribundas, hybrid teas, shrub and climbing roses.
Vines, Wisteria, some Clematis.
Fruit Bushes such as Blueberries, Blackcurrants, Gooseberries and Redcurrants.
Liberty Landscapes can help you determine the winter pruning needed to be done in your garden and can offer a garden tidy/prune over the winter to ensure the garden is ready to bloom and flourish in Spring!
Raised Flowerbeds
The winter is a perfect time to start planning the fruit and veg you will be growing next year. We can hand make raised flower beds of any size/height to compliment your garden to make the job of “growing your own” so much more accessible and easier to maintain. Raised beds ensure the perfect growing conditions with more good quality soil and the weeds cannot penetrate the beds!
We can build made to measure raised beds to fit into any size plot or area of your garden so start planning those fresh handgrown veg meals!
Drainage
This time of year our thoughts turn to ensuring the drainage in gardens and driveways is doing it’s job properly to protect from flooding. We pride ourselves on stonework and hard landscaping and have done numerous work over the years on properties to protect against flooding, ensuring the work is in keeping with the property as well.
